Arctic-Weather Nexus

This interactive event will show the public how changes in the Arctic, which has lost 80% of its ice since 1979, are directly causing extreme weather and temperature increases in the mid-latitudes like the United States. Arctic ice loss has now been attributed to the Nor'easter storms, drought in California, wildfires, and up to 1/2 of temperature rise. We'll help explain this phenomenon and introduce Ice911's solution for restoring lost Arctic ice in a fun interactive event with refreshments.

Check out Ice911 on the documentary news series, VICE, Friday, September 14th at 7:30PM across the U.S. on HBO!

Watch the trailer below!

Some scientists are working to develop a plan: use technology to 'geoengineer' the Earth's atmosphere and reduce the impacts of climate change. On a special episode of VICE on HBO, Shane Smith and Ben Anderson find out how it would work and how effective this radical, and potentially dangerous, plan could be.

Ice911 at GCAS: Restoring the Climate - Actionable Solutions

Panel: Restoring the Climate: Achievable Solutions

Existing actions to switch away from fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions are crucial but not sufficient to protect the life support systems of the planet. Fortunately, there are solutions to rapidly draw down and sequester carbon and to protect arctic ice that can give humanity the opportunity to reach a pre-industrial level of CO2 in the atmosphere and oceans.

This panel will explore the mission of climate restoration and some of the solutions that can get us there, creating jobs and economic benefit in the process.

Panelists:
Leslie Field, Ph.D., Founder and CEO, Ice911
Brent Constantz, Founder and CEO, Blue Planet
Peter Fiekowsky, Founder and President, Healthy Climate Alliance
Moderator:
Morgan Michael Bailey, Ph.D., Intrepid Consulting

Duration: 2 hours

Intended Audience: Investors, Policy Makers, and General Public

Presenter Bios:

Leslie Field, Ph.D., Founder and CEO, Ice911

Leslie Field has been working to save polar ice since 2006. An inventor with 54 US patents, she has worked at HP Labs, Agilent Labs and Chevron Research as well as leading a materials consulting group. Dr. Field earned her B.S. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from MIT and her MS and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley, with a minor in materials science. She now leads Ice911 and lectures at Stanford University.

Ice911 is an organization of dedicated engineers, citizens, and scientists with a viable, scalable solution to restore ice in the Arctic, which has lost 80% of its volume since 1979. We are conducting our research in the Arctic by using a reflective silica sand spread on top of ice to increase its reflectivity. If applied in strategic locations of the Arctic, climate-modeling shows that we can rebuild ice volume, decrease extreme weather, and reduce Arctic and global temperatures.

Brent Constantz, Founder and CEO, Blue Planet

Brent Constantz is serial Silicon Valley entrepreneur who founded and led as CEO: Norian Corporation 1987- 1998, Corazon Technologies 1998- 2002, Skeletal Kinetics 2002-2007, Calera Corporation 2007 -2010, DeepWater Desal 2011-date, and Blue Planet 2012-date. Dr. Constantz is the inventor on over 100 issued US patents, with over 100 more currently pending. He is a Consulting Associate Professor at Stanford University, where he teaches biomineralization.

Blue Planet develops and commercializes technology that uses CO2 as a raw material for making carbonate rocks. The carbonate rocks produced can substitute for natural limestone rock mined from quarries, which is the principal component of concrete. CO2 from flue gas is converted to carbonate (or CO3=) by contacting CO2 containing gas with a water-based capture solutions. This differentiates Blue Planet from most CO2 capture methods because the captured CO2 does not require a purification step, which is an energy and capital-intensive process. As a result Blue Planet’s capture method is extremely efficient, and results in a lower cost than traditional methods of CO2 capture.

Peter Fiekowsky, Founder and President, Healthy Climate Alliance

Peter Fiekowsky is the Founder and President of the Healthy Climate Alliance and Co-Founder of 300x2050.com. He is an entrepreneur committed to leaving a world we are proud of for our children. He is Founder and President of AVI, LLC., Board member of Repower Capital, Inc. and an MIT physicist with 27 US patents.

The Healthy Climate Alliance (HCA) is a nonprofit education, networking, and advocacy organization that promotes the goals of reversing global warming and restoring a healthy climate. HCA encourages achievable solutions for drawing down excess carbon dioxide from our atmosphere and restoring Arctic ice by 2050.
HCA is dedicated to promoting broad public awareness of the idea of climate restoration as a feasible goal. This is a necessary precursor to widespread demand for a global climate restoration goal and coordinated efforts to achieve it.

HCA and its partner organizations (the Foundation for Climate Restoration, Center for Climate Restoration, and 300x2050 Inc.) operate within an ecosystem of climate restoration-related organizations and efforts. HCA facilitates collaboration between the organizations, connecting climate restoration solutions like carbon dioxide removal technologies with funders, policymakers, media experts, and safety experts. HCA hosts conferences to facilitate collaboration and networking within and between Working Groups.

Moderator: Morgan Michael Bailey, Founder, Intrepid Coaching

Morgan Michael Bailey is the founder of Intrepid Coaching, a leadership development firm focused on helping empower leaders to build a more conscious and healthy world. Morgan's technical background focused on the intersection of human health and environment, having performed research on topics from indoor air pollution to the health of coastal water bodies. Through his professional experience he has worked with academic institutions, non-profits, and foreign governments
